Event Details

On Thursday, January 30th, El Sistema Minnesota invites you to attend the 2nd Annual Instrument Ceremony and Concert to be held at MN Opera located at 620 North First Street in Minneapolis!  This concert will be held to benefit children and families in North Minneapolis.

El Sistema Minnesota is a crime-prevention, social justice non-profit that seeks community development and civic engagement through classical music.  The idea is, like the orchestra, though we are all here with our many different talents, we are also still here to agree upon the same thing.

Operated out of Nellie Stone Johnson K8, students are provided brand-new instruments and class instruction four days a week after school.  MMTA-certified instructors and Minnesota Orchestra musicians donate their time on a weekly basis and instruct the children in choir, music theory, and orchestra.  El Sistema Minnesota also strives to meet student basic needs by providing groceries and produce, homework assistance, school supplies, winter clothing, Christmas toys, and much more.  The program begins in the student’s first grade and encourages participation until high school graduation.

As Maestro Jose Antonio Abreu, founder of El Sistema, has said, “Poverty is not necessarily the lack of bread or roof, but it is the feeling of being no one.”

On Thursday, January 30th, students will perform what they’ve learned all year including a performance from first year students on their hand-made paper mache violins.  Following, students will turn in their paper instruments for their own real violins.  To celebrate, an ensemble of musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra will perform.

The event will also include a silent auction.  Featured auction items include a guitar from Schmitt music, a private tour of MPR, and private lessons from various Minnesota Orchestra musicians!

To order tickets, visit or call 952-465-4756.  Tickets are $25.

Guests are encouraged to bring food items to benefit the families of El Sistema Minnesota.  Fresh produce and meat are also encouraged.  To learn more, visit or
